Documentation review updated September 18, 2026: pricing, restriction claims and Apple instructions corrected. No hands-on effectiveness or bypass testing was performed.
The short answer
BetBlocker offers free gambling-blocking software; Gamban and GamBlock offer paid options. Choose based on your device, budget and the provider’s restriction policy. This comparison reviews public documentation, not hands-on bypass testing. Combine device controls with the appropriate self-exclusion program and available payment controls.
What a gambling blocker actually does
A gambling blocker sits between you and the sites you’re trying to avoid. Most work one of two ways: a DNS filter that refuses to resolve known gambling domains, or a device-level content restriction that blocks categories of apps and sites system-wide. Either way, the job is the same — put a wall between the urge and the tap.
That’s it. It doesn’t know why you’re gambling, it doesn’t track your progress, and it doesn’t do anything about the sportsbook app already logged in on your laptop at work. If you’re looking for “gambling blocker app” right now, you’re probably mid-relapse-risk or coming off one — so it’s worth being straight with you about what these tools can and can’t do before we compare them.
The honest limits, before the honest reviews
A provider’s list of supported devices and restriction features is not proof that every gambling site or access route is blocked. Before choosing a tool, check:
- Device coverage. Install and configure it on the devices you use; a restriction on one device does not automatically protect another.
- Restriction and removal policy. Check what the provider says happens during and after your chosen period. We have not tested bypass resistance.
- Missing sites. BetBlocker provides a missing-site reporting process and says its database is not exhaustive. Check the equivalent support route for your chosen tool.
- Other support. Blocking access can be one part of a plan, alongside appropriate self-exclusion, available payment controls and professional support.
Our guide to quitting gambling describes practical next steps and support options.
The layered-defense framing
Here’s the honest structure that support organizations and the tools themselves actually recommend, and it’s not a single app:

- A blocker on every device you own (Gamban, BetBlocker, or Screen Time).
- Self-exclusion with the operators you actually use, or a national program where one exists.
- A bank-level gambling transaction block, where your bank offers one; coverage and payment exceptions vary.
GamCare, the UK’s largest gambling support charity, runs exactly this combination through its TalkBanStop program — free Gamban software, self-exclusion signposting, and payment guidance, bundled together because none of the three catches everything alone (GamCare, TalkBanStop). If you’re in the US, the equivalent moves are: block on-device, self-exclude with your state’s regulated operators where available (the state self-exclusion directory links to program information and explains where enrollment is not verified), and ask your bank which controls and exceptions apply. We cover the self-exclusion side in detail in our self-exclusion guide, and the bank side in how to block gambling transactions at your bank.
Gamban — a paid option for multiple devices
Gamban is the closest thing to an industry standard. It’s the software GamCare distributes for free through its own support programs, which tells you something about how it’s regarded by people whose job is stopping gambling harm.
What it does: Blocks access to tens of thousands of gambling sites and apps across iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac from one account. It also layers in some quit-tracking features — time and money saved since you started.
Price: The UK pricing page displayed £29.99 annually or £4.99 monthly on September 18, 2026. Confirm the price, currency and renewal terms for your country (Gamban pricing).
Restriction policy: Check the provider’s current policy and device requirements. We have not performed independent removal or bypass tests.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants one blocker across phone and computer and is willing to pay for the documented features and support. It’s the option we’d point a friend to if they only wanted to install one thing today.
BetBlocker — free software with an active-restriction policy
BetBlocker is built and maintained by a UK-registered charity, funded through grants and donations, with zero subscriptions or in-app purchases (BetBlocker).
What it does: BetBlocker blocks websites and services in its maintained database. Its FAQ permits installation on multiple devices without a seven-device limit and says support will not lift an active restriction (BetBlocker).
Price: Free, permanently.
Restriction policy: Check the provider’s current policy and device requirements. We have not performed independent removal or bypass tests.
Who it’s for: Anyone who wants a hard commitment device and doesn’t want to pay for one. If you’re the type who’s uninstalled a blocker mid-urge before, BetBlocker’s lock-in is the point.
GamBlock — check the licence for your device
GamBlock has been around since the early 2000s and uses pattern-based detection to catch new gambling sites and software rather than relying purely on manual list updates.
What it does: Blocks gambling sites and software on Windows, with Android and iOS support also available.
Price: GamBlock sells several platform and licence options. Check the specific licence on its official pricing page; we have removed an unverified universal annual range.
Restriction policy: Check the provider’s current policy and device requirements. We have not performed independent removal or bypass tests.
Who it may suit: Someone comparing the supported platform and licence terms with other blockers. We have not established that its protection is stronger or weaker than the alternatives.
Generic tools: Screen Time, DNS filtering, and app blockers
You don’t need dedicated gambling software to build real friction. A few free or near-free options:
iOS Screen Time (free, built in). Apple’s Content & Privacy Restrictions can block web content by category and require a passcode before any app can be installed or deleted — including a betting app you’ve just uninstalled in a moment of clarity (Apple Support: Screen Time content restrictions). Here’s the fast setup:
- Open Settings → Screen Time.
- Tap Turn On Screen Time, then Continue.
- Set a Screen Time passcode that’s different from your device passcode — and give it to a partner, friend, or family member, not yourself. This step is the one people skip, and it’s the one that matters.
- Tap Content & Privacy Restrictions, turn it on.
- Under Content Restrictions → Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites and manually add known betting and casino domains to the “Never Allow” list.
- Under iTunes & App Store Purchases, review Installing Apps and Deleting Apps separately. Blocking deletion alone does not prevent an app from being installed.
It’s free and already on your phone, but it’s only as strong as whoever holds the passcode. If you set it yourself and know it, you can turn it off in ten seconds during an urge.
NextDNS (free tier available). A DNS-level filter you can configure to block a gambling content category across your home network and any device pointed at it. Good for covering a router or a shared household connection, weaker on a phone that switches networks constantly.
Cold Turkey / Freedom (paid, desktop-focused). General-purpose site and app blockers, not gambling-specific, but useful if your risk is mostly desktop browsing during work hours and you want scheduled lock-in windows.
Comparison table
This is a documentation comparison, not a measured effectiveness ranking. Provider pricing and supported devices can change.
| Tool | Cost information | What to verify before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Gamban | UK page: £29.99/year or £4.99/month, checked September 18, 2026 | Your local price, supported devices and removal policy |
| BetBlocker | Free | Restriction period, supported devices and what happens when the period ends |
| GamBlock | Paid; licence-specific pricing | Exact platform and licence you need |
| Apple Screen Time | Included with supported Apple devices | Website list, app restrictions and who can change the settings |
| NextDNS, Cold Turkey or Freedom | Check provider pricing | These are general filters or blockers; do not assume a maintained gambling-specific list |
BetBlocker’s FAQ describes different expiry rules for short and longer restrictions, including a further cooling-off period in some cases. Read the current terms before activating a restriction; a stated policy is not proof that circumvention is technically impossible.
How to choose based on your situation
- You want one thing, installed today, that’s hard to argue yourself out of: BetBlocker. Free, and the lock-in period does the willpower work for you.
- You want the most polished multi-device coverage and don’t mind paying: Gamban. It’s what treatment programs hand out for a reason.
- You’re mostly at risk on a work computer during the day: Cold Turkey or Freedom, scheduled to lock during work hours, layered with Screen Time on your phone.
- You share a household network and want a baseline everyone benefits from: NextDNS on the router, plus a personal blocker on your own device.
- You’ve relapsed through a blocker before: stop relying on the blocker alone. Add self-exclusion and a bank block — see our guides on self-exclusion and blocking gambling transactions at your bank. If sports betting specifically is your pattern, how to stop sports betting covers the sport-specific triggers a general blocker won’t touch.

Where Cashout fits
We’re building Cashout because a blocker alone was never going to be the full answer, and we don’t think it’s honest to pretend otherwise. Cashout is launching soon, and blocking betting apps and sites is one layer inside a full quit program — alongside a streak and money-saved tracker, an urge panic button for the moment a blocker doesn’t cover, a CBT-based daily program, and step-by-step self-exclusion walkthroughs so you’re not figuring that part out alone at 1am.
We’re not live yet, so there’s nothing to download today — but you can join the waitlist to get access when we open up.
If you’re in crisis right now, don’t wait on any app. In the US, call or text the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-MY-RESET (1-800-697-3738), free and 24/7; in the UK it’s 0808 8020 133. Our help page lists the free helpline for a dozen countries plus worldwide support.
