Does Citi block gambling transactions?
A US card issuer that already treats every bet you place as a cash advance — priced like one from the first dollar, with no switch anywhere to stop it. This page covers Citi credit cards and Citibank debit cards.

The short answer
No. Citi has no gambling-specific block. The only control it offers is Citi Quick Lock, which stops new spending on the locked card. Quick Lock is Citi's own card-lock control and sits behind a sign-in. That is the honest answer, and it means the block has to come from somewhere else — the sections below say where.
What can Citi actually stop?
One thing, bluntly: Citi Quick Lock.
- Where it is
- Citi Mobile app or Citi Online → your card → Quick Lock
- What it stops
- New spending on the locked card. Quick Lock is Citi's own card-lock control and sits behind a sign-in.
- What still gets through
- Citi publishes nothing about Quick Lock on any page that can be read without signing in, so what keeps clearing while it is on is undocumented. Treat that as a gap rather than a reassurance: cancel a recurring gambling charge with the operator itself instead of trusting the lock to catch it.
- Undo delay
- None. It comes off in a tap. That is the difference between this and a gambling block — a control with no delay is a control an urge simply switches off.
What doesn't it cover?
- There is no gambling merchant-category control on any Citi consumer card we could verify.
- Quick Lock reverses in a tap and carries no cooling-off period.
- Being charged as a cash advance is a price, not a block. Citi is telling you the transaction costs more, not refusing it.
What works instead at Citi?
In this order, tonight, while the resolve is there.
- 1 Self-exclude from the betting apps themselves — the only ban in this list somebody other than you has to enforce.
- 2 Enroll in your state's self-exclusion program where one exists.
- 3 Ask Citi to lower your cash advance limit. Gambling is charged against it by definition here, so a smaller cash line is a smaller gambling line.
- 4 Add a device blocker so the sites and apps are gone from the phone.
- 5 Move day-to-day money to an account with a published gambling block and leave the Citi card for fixed bills.
Is a bank block enough on its own?
No — a card control stops a payment method, not an account, and there is always another payment method. The setup that holds is layered: operator self-exclusion, app by app, your state's self-exclusion program where one exists, and a blocker that locks betting apps on your phone. The full method is in the guide to blocking gambling transactions at your bank. If you want the number that makes the case, work out what this is costing you a year.
Money in more than one place?
A block on one card just moves the spending to the next one. Do every account you hold, in the same sitting.
